• A teacher workshop was held for high school teachers around a 12 hour cruise on the R/V Sproul from Thursday, July 26th through Wednesday, August 1st. The cruise was Saturday, July 28th.
  • Workshop locations included both USD and SIO. Participants also had the chance to tour parts of SIO and go to the Birch Aquarium.
  • The teachers were introduced to no- or low-cost laboratory methods at USD before participating on the research cruise and then were involved in seafloor sediment, rock and water sampling on board the R/V Sproul.
  • Teachers were tasked with the development of modules that teach STEM/geoscience/oceanography concepts that they will then teach this year in their classrooms. They will then report back about what aspects of the modules that worked well and those that need to be changed.
  • The modules were to be developed to address some of the following concepts: 1) physical properties of seawater, 2) micropaleontology, 3) using technology to study the oceans, 4) anthropogenic impacts, 5) the geology of the seafloor and 6) chemistry of the oceans.
  • The ultimate goal is to make these modules, along with seafloor material from the SIO Geological Collections, available to educators across California.
